When it comes to advancing racial equity, white women who have management or supervisory positions have distinctive opportunities and challenges. Many white women who care about racial justice want to understand how our privilege and lack of cross-cultural skills create barriers for People of Color. We are concerned about causing harm with our microaggressions and biases and simultaneously worry about backlash for missteps. These dynamics can prevent us from creating mutually respectful relationships with colleagues of color, and from providing employees of color the guidance they deserve. This can ultimately lead to their dismissals and departures while white women continue to advance.
This workshop will support participants to deepen awareness of the combination of institutional power, privilege, and stereotypes white women leaders both hold and perpetuate, supporting them in becoming more compassionate anti-racist managers and supervisors. Using case studies, personas, and real workplace examples, we’ll provide space for interactive small and large group discussion. Participants will leave better able to name and take responsibility for putting racial equity values into our leadership practices.
This session is designed primarily for an audience of white women interested in growing their anti-racist leadership practices.
