New Workshop on White Women's Leadership

workshop title with outlines of women and headshot of Ilsa Govan and Tilman Smith

A new workshop from our co-founder Ilsa Govan and colleague Tilman Smith, Transforming White Women's Leadership: Reflection and Inspiration to Strengthen Racial Justice Practices, is for white women interested in growing their anti-racist leadership practices.

This workshop will support participants to deepen awareness of the combination of institutional power, privilege, and stereotypes white women leaders both hold and perpetuate, supporting them in becoming more compassionate anti-racist managers and supervisors. Using case studies, personas, and real workplace examples, we’ll provide space for interactive small and large group discussion. Participants will leave better able to name and take responsibility for putting racial equity values into our leadership practices.

Date: Friday, November 8, 2024

Time: 9:00-12:00pm PDT / 12:00-3:00pm EDT

Location: This event is on Zoom.

National Hispanic, Latino/a, Latine Heritage Month

national hispanic heritage month

National Hispanic Heritage Month commences on September 15th through October 15th and celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Americans of Spanish, Mexican, Caribbean and Central and South American ancestry.

In last year's September newsletter issue, we spoke of the phrase "Hispanic" and the controversy surrounding it as a broad term that artificially categorizes together the complex identities of millions of people. Commonly used alternative phrases include Latino/a, Latinx, and Latine. To read last year's post, as well as articles, speaking to the complexity of these identities, visit our blog, Hispanic Heritage Month Starts Today.

To read varying perspectives on who uses which terms and why, check out these articles below.

If you missed our interview from March with the fascinating Hank Olguin, who dedicated his life to combatting Latine stereotypes in the media, read it on our blog here.

Orange Shirt Day: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30th

Orange Shirt Day, which was designated by the Orange Shirt Society, began in 2013 in Canada to reflect on the atrocities committed by the government against First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples by forcibly placing children in Residential Schools. In 2021, the Canadian Government named September 30th the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The video below explains the origins of Orange Shirt Day which originated from Phyllis Webstad's experience at a Residential School.

Locally, the Duwamish Tribe shared a development in the U.S. this year,

"In July, the Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland announced the release of the second and final volume of the investigative report called for in the Federal Indian Boarding School Initiative. The report details the atrocities committed at 417 Indian boarding schools that had funding from the federal government including 17 in WA state between 1819 through the 1970s, and confirmed the deaths of at least 973 American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian children at these schools. The report includes recommendations on next steps to 'support a path to healing the nation.' In the announcement, Assistant Secretary Newland says, “For the first time in the history of the United States, the federal government is accounting for its role in operating historical Indian boarding schools that forcibly confined and attempted to assimilate Indigenous children."
